Parental controls when kids switch devices

Updated October 2026

The most common reason screen time rules fail isn’t the rule. It’s that a limit on one device sends kids straight to another: the laptop, then a different browser, then the phone. Here’s how to close those gaps.

1. Put the same limits on every computer

With Lockave, limits belong to your account, not to one machine. Install the Chrome extension on each computer they use and sign in, and the same limits apply everywhere. Each browser counts its own minutes today, so a 60-minute limit means up to 60 minutes on each computer.

2. Close the “other browser” gap

On a Windows PC, the Lockave app (closed beta) can give Edge, Firefox and other programs their own daily allowance and close them when it’s used up, so switching browsers doesn’t get around the limit.

3. Use the phone’s own controls for phones

Lockave doesn’t block on phones or tablets yet. On iPhone and iPad, use Apple Screen Time; on Android, Google Family Link. Many families use both: built-in controls on the phone, Lockave on the computers.

4. See it all in one place

Lockave’s dashboard shows how much time is spent, on which sites and devices, so you know whether the rules are working without checking each device.

5. Make the rules hard to bargain with

Arguments start when a limit can be negotiated. With Lockave, loosening a limit waits 10 minutes, tightening is instant, and you’re alerted if the extension is removed. The rule is the rule.

WhereWhat Lockave does there
Chrome (on Windows and Mac computers)The Lockave extension enforces daily limits on any site (YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, web games), downtime windows and focus sessions. Optional: blocks adult sites, keeps search on SafeSearch and YouTube in Restricted Mode, and warns about dangerous sites.
Windows PC (closed beta)The Lockave Windows app blocks adult content for the whole machine and can close programs, including other browsers, once their daily allowance is used up.
iPhone, iPad and Mac appsManage limits and see screen time from anywhere. They don’t block anything on those devices yet.

Questions

Does a limit share time across devices?

Not yet. Each browser counts its own minutes, so the same limit applies separately on each computer.

What about the TV and games consoles?

Lockave doesn’t cover them. Use the device’s own parental controls or your router’s.
