Block YouTube on every device

Updated October 2026

YouTube is everywhere: in every browser, as an app on phones and tablets, and on the TV. No single switch covers all of them, so here is what works on each device, including where Lockave helps and where it doesn’t.

In Chrome, on any computer

Install the Lockave extension and sign in. Then either:

  • Limit it: give youtube.com a daily allowance, like 60 minutes. When it’s used up, YouTube is blocked until tomorrow.
  • Block it at set times: add a downtime window, like 9pm to 7am, when limited sites are blocked automatically.
  • Keep it clean: turn on Restricted Mode so YouTube hides mature videos. It can also hide some ordinary ones.

Set the limit once and it applies in Chrome on every computer where Lockave is installed. Today each browser counts its own minutes.

In other browsers on a Windows PC

A kid who hits the limit in Chrome may open Edge or Firefox instead. The Lockave Windows app (closed beta) can give those browsers their own daily allowance and close them when it’s used up, so the limit isn’t one tab away.

On iPhone, iPad and Android

Lockave doesn’t block anything on phones or tablets yet. Use the controls built into the device:

  • iPhone and iPad: Apple Screen Time (Settings → Screen Time) can limit the YouTube app and websites in Safari. See Lockave vs Apple Screen Time.
  • Android: Google Family Link can set app limits.

On a TV or games console

Use the device’s own parental controls or your router. Lockave doesn’t cover these.

Questions

Can I block YouTube completely instead of limiting it?

Yes. In Chrome, a limit stops YouTube once the daily allowance is used, and a downtime window blocks it entirely during set hours. To block it all day, use the shortest limit and a downtime window that covers the day.

Will my kid know how much YouTube time is left?

Yes. The Lockave extension shows today’s limits and the time left, and shows a clear screen when a limit is reached.
